Philadelphia’s, from left, Trey Crockett, Javienn Moore and Bralynn Crockett celebrate as the Tornadoes advanced in the playoffs,

The Philadelphia Tornadoes visit Taylorsville Friday night in a clash of Class 2A football titans in the third round of the state playoffs.

Both teams come in with 12-1 record. Philadelphia advanced in the playoffs last Friday night by dominating Perry Central 42-8. The Tartars defeated Collins 21-8. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

“They are a lot like us,” Philadelphia coach David Frey said. “They have a solid defense with a lot of speed. They can run and pass the ball well. Without a doubt, they are the best team we have played.

“We have two common opponents in Scott Central and Union. But you can’t tell anything from that. We have improved since those games and so have they. It should be a great game that comes down to the team that makes the fewest mistakes.”

Neither team has lost to a Mississippi High School Activities Association team. The Tornadoes lost their first game of the season to Center Point of Birmingham, 26-20. Taylorsville lost to Jackson Prep 28-0.

Frey said his team is coming off a dominating performance over Perry Central.

“We played well the other night and controlled the game,” Fry said. “We didn’t have the ball but three times in the first half. They held on to the ball but didn’t score.”

Philadelphia took the opening kickoff. In five plays, the Tornadoes drove 55 yards and scored when Kadarius Calloway caught a 32-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Asher Morgan. Connor Long kicked the extra point and Philadelphia led 7-0 with 10:37 left in the first quarter.

That’s how it stood until the second quarter. Calloway intercepted a pass, giving Philadelphia the ball on its own 23-yard line. Nine plays later, Janeylon Dupree caught a 20-yard TD pass from Morgan. The kick failed and the Tornadoes led 13-0. That’s how it stood at the half.

In the third quarter, Philadelphia scored when Trey Crockett ran 12 yards for touchdown. Crockett ran in the two point conversion and the Tornadoes led 21-0 with 8:58 left in the period.

Perry Central then scored its points on a 50-yard TD pass play. The two point conversion was good and Philadelphia led 21-8 with 5:54 left in the third quarter.

Philadelphia answered two plays after the kickoff as Raedarius Triplett ran 45 yards for a touchdown. Long’s kick was good and the Tornadoes led 28-8 with 5:07 left in the quarter.

Tekavius Bingham intercepted a pass to set up the next Tornado score. Five plays, Crockett threw a 69-yard TD pass play to Calloway. The extra point was good and the Tornadoes led 35-8 with 10:58 left in the game..

Three plays later, Perry Central fumbled the ball and Francisco Wilson recovered the fumble and returned 30 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good, ending the scoring for the game.

Morgan completed 7-of-9 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Calloway had four catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Crockett ran the ball twice for 29 yards and a touchdown. He also threw a 69 yard touchdown pass.

On defense, Calloway had two interceptions. Breon Jordan led with nine tackles while Crockett, Wilson and Jatarian Hudson all had seven interceptions.
